Very insightful and helpful. I don't have a problem with getting up on stage or anything.. I am a dancer. The problem I have is collecting my thoughts together on the spot and sound good while I am publicly speaking. I notice a lot of filler words like like, umm, you know from other people so I try not to do that myself. I guess when I am speaking I am very conscious about what I say. What insights do you have on that? Thanks

Great article, one of the best i've read on the subject.

Toastmaster is the way to overcome fears of public speaking, getting up and speaking in a safe environment where mistakes are ok is an enlightening experience.

i've often found that the beginning of my speeches are where i struggle the most, so i make a point of memorising my intro so i can come into the speech with a bang, and they always go great from then onwards...

i've written about my journey from being a terrified public speaker to someone who can speak without (too much!) fear here www.overcomepublicspeakingfears.com

Hi Nick,
Thankyou for your kind comments on my video: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xbizz2_how-to-remove-your-fear-of-public-s_shortfilms.
The information you have here is put together extremely well and I would love to publish it on my website if possible. Having helped many people overcome their fears of public speaking, I think this report explains the issue very well and is easily understood.
Let me know if you'd like to publish it to my site - you can email me on tom@tombreeze.com.
Many thanks,
Tom.

Nick,

Very well done! I have to say that the flowchart is one of the most comprehensive explanations of public speaking fear that I've ever seen. You mention many great ideas and I think that anyone with public speaking fear should read. I also have an article on my site that dives into the root and a cure for public speaking fear, Public Speaking Fear: The root and a cure. Thanks again for a great article.

Hi Nick,

I ended up here from your comment on my Hubpage article on Public speaking.

I read the above article fully and I should say you have presented the ideas very lucidly with a unique flow chart. I really appreciate some of the say- to- yourself- suggestions like "- This is an uncomfortable feeling, but it is okay that I feel this way.
- This is not the best feeling in the world, but it is truly not the worst feeling. "

But somehow the NLP techniques that you have suggested are not very appealing to me! I am a more practical and less imaginative person!

Overall, well done and very useful.

Hi, Nick, what a wonderful effort to explain public speaking anxiety. It reaches indeed very broadly and doesn't leave a stone unturned. I also enjoyed your writing style: straightforward and clear. I think this article will help lots of people to understand what you only learn once you have placed yourself in front of an audience several times - that the fear will turn into excitement and then... people will wish they hadn't encouraged you to speak in public in the first place because they can't get you to shut up! (Lol - only joking, just talking about myself here...)

Keep in touch,
Ana

Very comprehensive analysis of speaking anxiety, Nick. Really good work.

Not only does your flowchart identify potential causes, you give specific (an effective) advice on how to manage and eliminate these fears. I strongly agree that Toastmasters is a powerful resource. Not only will Toastmasters provide a safe environment and structured program, it is inexpensive as well.

Thanks for this detailed post.
